Discover the secrets to keeping your Flowers and Pre-rolls as fresh as possible for a tastier smoke.
All flower when sold has gone through harvest, curing, trimming, and packaging before even hitting the shelves. The time range for all this can be over a month or more! But now that you have your precious flower in hand, how do you store it to keep the potency and flavor intact? Once THC starts to degrade, a natural conversion happens where THC becomes CBN. Air, light, temperature, and humidity can all speed up this conversion leading to a less enjoyable experience or unexpected high.
Let's go through the most common issues of what can affect your weed's freshness and methods of storage and how they can impact the shelf life of your cannabis.
CBN - Nappy time
CBN is a natural cannabinol found in cannabis that can lead to a sleep-inducing effect. As your flower ages, the terpenes evaporate and THC starts its conversion into CBN. You may notice that your uplifting and invigorating flower now has the opposite effect a few months later, giving you a couch-lock high instead.
Light- Oh it's so bright
Light, whether from the big red fireball in the sky or from the modern convenience of a light bulb, will speed up the CBN conversion. UV rays, natural or artificial, is high energy. This energy will start breaking down the chemical compounds of your cannabis, leading to discoloration, off-flavor, and CBN conversion.
Air- That shit you breath
The browning of an avocado or banana...eww. That's what air does to your cannabis too. Oxygen oxidizes, rapidly decaying all organic matter. Oxidation will brown and dry out your weed and also contribute to that dreaded CBN.
Temperature- Is it warm in here?
Your cannabis is like Goldilocks, she likes it mids. As in under 70F. Anything too hot will rapidly evaporate your tasty terpenes and decay your potency. Temps too low will also have detrimental effects on your cannabis. Keeping flower in extremely cold temperatures can actually lower your potency. Trichomes on your flower, the glittery specks of magical dust, are where all that THC and terpenes call home. Cold temps can make these trichomes brittle and fall off.
Humidity- I'm so moist
Keeping your cannabis at the right humidity is also extremely important. Dry open air can increase your terpene evaporation, drying out your flower to the point where it's harsh to smoke. On the other spectrum, keeping your weed too humid can lead to mold growth! The optimal relative humidity for your buds should be between 59% and 63%. An inexpensive hygrometer can help determine your humidity levels.
Storage Methods- That goes where?
Considering all that can go wrong and what not to do, what are the methods out here to store your buds and keep them fresh?
In A Baggy
A plastic bag, whether it's mylar or zip-lock should only be used to temporarily house your flower. Bags are flimsy and can easily crush your flower but more importantly, can cause a static charge. Static can rip your precious trichomes from your flower and have them stuck to the sides of the bag.
In The Fridge / Freezer
The extremely cold temps of a fridge or freezer might be tempting place to store your weed but we highly advise against it. The cold temps can make your trichomes brittle and fall off. Cold air trapped can also lead to condensation which can lead to mold growth as well.
Airtight Jar
The tried and true method of storage. Keeping your flower in an airtight jar and cool dark spot is one of the best methods of storing your cannabis. Make sure you store it in a spot that is away from any fluctuating temps, a dark cupboard is great, next to your computer is not.
Vacuum Sealing - The Extra Extra
Vacuum Sealing your cannabis is a perfect method for keeping your buds tastier for longer. Vacuum sealing reduces the amount of air and moisture in your weed while keeping it airtight preventing harmful things from getting in. Vacuum sealing is best done with a vacuum-sealed container rather than a vacuum bag.
Vacuum bags can easily crush your nugs and produce "brick weed".
